The phrase, “Mad as a March Hare” was popularised by Lewis Carroll in his 1865 children’s book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Similar phrases had been in use since the 16th Century. It stems from the observed behavior of hares in the breeding season. They behave unpredictably and excitedly.
